Essential Safety Gear While River Rafting
Here’s the foundational safety gear for whitewater rafting that should always be used on the Green River:
Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
A properly fitted life jacket is the most important piece of rafting safety gear. It should be U.S. Coast Guard–approved and worn at all times on the water, not strapped to the raft or left unused.
Helmet (When Appropriate)
Helmets are commonly used on whitewater sections or when navigating tighter channels. While some stretches near Dutch John are calmer, helmets are still part of standard rafting safety full gear for guided or technical trips.
Cold-Water Protection
Because the Green River stays cold, wetsuits or dry tops are often recommended. Cold exposure is one of the biggest safety concerns in this area, even on sunny days.
Footwear
Secure water shoes or river sandals protect your feet from rocks and debris. Bare feet are unsafe and not recommended for rafting launches or shore breaks.
